Save money on Electric and Ultilities

You can save money on electric and other utility bills by making a few small changes. You can go green and save money without having to overhaul your entire living arrangement.

When I say go green and save money I am not saying get solar panels, or start wearing synthetics. I am talking about reducing your over use of energy. You want to save money on electric bills then try some of the following tips. You may be surprised how much money you can save on your utilities by introducing these practices.

Simple Tips to Save Money on Electric Bills

Unplug Unused Items. I was shocked to learn that even though you turn your coffee pot off in the morning that electricity is still being run through. On items like toasters, coffee pots, or other plus in item you use once in a while, remove the plug from the outlet. I keep things like the TV that need programming plugged in.

Shut Down Your Computer. I know it takes FOREVER to start back up, but shutting down your computer instead of running it all night when you sleep and all day when you are at work saves big chunk of electricity. Most computer have hybernation mode, which can help you save money on electric bills without much work. Check your operating system setting for power save options.

Change to Compact Flourescent Light Bulbs. I originally hated these things because they gave off this putrid dull yellow glow. Well now they have bulbs that give off the bright white of a regulat light bulb. Switching to florescent bulbs will help you save A LOT of money on your electric bill. They consum about 1/3 less power and last up to 10X longer than regular bulbs.

Insulate your Hot Water Heater. Whether your hot water heater is electric or gas, wrapping it in a hot water jacket can help you save big time.

You Cold Water. I am not talking about taking cold shower but washing your clothes on a cold cycle as often as possible will help save money on electric and gas bills since they pull wayer from your water heater. You can also look into low flow shower heads to reduce the amount of water pulled from your water heater as well.

Go Easy on the AC. Air Conditioning is a big energy killer. If you are not in the middle of a heat wave, try using ceiling fans or stand alone fans as an alternative to staying cooler during the warmer months.

Update Windows and Appliances. The biggest way to save money on eletric and gas bills is to update your appliances to more energy efficient one's. New windows help keep the heat in during the winter and some of the heat out during the summer. If your can afford to do some upgrading, this is where your biggest utility bill savings will come from. Your fridge alone can account for 20% of your electric bill.
