What is MLM Fraud?

by Omar Jaffari

Are all Multilevel Marketing programs a fraud? Look at it this way: thousands upon thousands of people all over the world earn full-time and supplementary incomes from MLM. Some individuals have even become self made millionaires thanks to MLM businesses. From this, we can accurately deduce that MLM is an overall honest industry. However, there are those companies out there that traffic in MLM fraud. It is these companies that truly give the MLM business a negative connotation. That is why it is important to look out for the red flags that are indicative of a fraud.

At the core of Multilevel Marketing fraud is the age old concept of a Ponzi scheme. This is where no one actually earns revenues in the MLM paradigm as much as their own money is shifted around to other members. Of course, there comes a point where the money runs out and people never receive any return on their investments. In short, such entities are a thorough scam and need to be avoided at all costs. Of course, you need to identify a Ponzi scheme from the outset in order to avoid it. Again, such avoidance will center on ID’ing the red flags of MLM fraud. Here are a few of them:

Asking potential members for a lot of “start up money” with a no money back guarantee is usually not a good sign. Legitimate and reliable companies only want to work with people that want to work with them. They also value their reputation in the marketplace. As a result, they are not interested in taking money and refusing to give it back. That’s why all the good companies do not charge unreasonable amounts to become involved and they certainly do not refuse refunds. Those that do may very well be an MLM fraud.

Since legitimate companies want to ensure you succeed, they will provide adequate training and support. This can come in the form of ebooks, webinars, audio/video training files, and many other methods. Yes, there is a lot of work involved producing such training items. But, the legit companies will put the extra effort in to make sure all their affiliates succeed. Those that do not put such effort forward may very well be an MLM fraud scheme.

When you sign on with an MLM company, can you explicitly state who you work for and where they are located. Surely, if you are affiliated with a major company such as Amway, you would be able to do this in seconds. That is because Amway is a legitimate company and they provide complete contact information. However, an Multilevel Marketing fraud venture will almost always hide who they are and make it difficult to contact them. Now, if the company won’t tell you who they are and how to reach them, do they sound like a legitimate company? Hardly!

Yes, the MLM fraud services are pretty easy to spot once you realize a few of their common traits. Being able to recognize these frauds is critical since it will save you a great deal of time, money, effort, and, yes, sanity. So, stick with the legit MLM companies. They will be much more productive for you in the end.
