Viral Email Marketing

It sometimes happens that a story begins to gain momentum and rapidly grows to legendary proportions. Thanks in large part to viral email marketing, this age-old phenomenon has now been employed in the marketing and promotions arena.

This strategy results in the ability to convey a marketing message to a much larger group of people. As an added advantage, it can be done at a far less expensive cost than traditional marketing methods. How is this possible? It's not as complex as one might imagine at first glance.

First, it's essential to understand the basics of how viral email marketing is carried out. In general terms, it's like word of mouth marketing, but email technology is the means of transmission instead of the spoken word. The way this works is that a new marketing slogan or ad campaign in sent out via email, and those who receive it forward it on the their friends and contacts.

More and more people become aware of your product or service and, hopefully, many of them will become customers. The most obvious benefit here is cost. There is virtually no overhead involved with this type of advertising campaign and the size of the audience you could reach is virtually limitless.

It's important to realize that in order for this kind of strategy to work, the email message must be carefully crafted. The tone and text of the message must compel people to forward the message. Here is an example of how this is achieved:

The owner of a company that distributes health related supplements is launching a new product that is extolled for its anti-aging properties. So, a marketing email is sent out that says something like "This product has made me look years younger. I thought would pass this on to others who might benefit from it." Obviously, this email sends the reader a powerful message that the product is so great that as many people as possible should have the opportunity to try it.

The result is that people who receive the email will often be inclined to forward it on to other people. If the message is enticing enough, it will soon take on a life of its own. This is what viral email marketing is all about.

Does this lack of complexity make the technique any less useful? Not at all; in fact, it's this inherent simplicity that can make the message so appealing. Many times, people assume that it is necessary to go overboard with a complicated marketing strategy in order to be successful. This couldn't be further from the truth. This is why old-school marketing methods are being quickly ousted in the ever-evolving age of information.

Viral email marketing has another notable advantage; it's far more personally engaging than other marketing techniques. It does not center on impersonal, generic advertisements.

This greeting card style approach has far greater appeal to consumers than typical impersonal methods of advertising. It is this personal touch that makes viral email marketing so wildly effective. And of course, effectiveness is the most important measure of any marketing strategy.
