Creating RSS Feeds

by Samo Yanezic

If you are new to the idea of creating RSS feeds, then RSS stands for really simple syndication. This is a software solution that takes information and presents it in a clear, and simple short form so that it can be displayed to readers by means of a browser or feed reader. Once the content is presented in this way it can be viewed by a lot of different computer programs.

When you start creating RSS feeds for you blog, you’ll soon find that you’re getting more traffic. Creating a feed is really easy and it is one of the main things likely to increase the popularity of your blog. Creating RSS feeds is a free service and although there are a number of providers, most blog owners use Feedburner, although this is now owned by Google. Nowadays you can create a feed for your website as well as for a blog, which used not to be the case.

Feedburner

Burning a feed with Feedburner is a really simple process, and the site offers other things that will help you to promote your feed and attract more visitors to your blog or website. Feedburner has some great widgets that you can download onto your site or blog and where people can, if they wish, subscribe for regular updates to your site in either a Google or Yahoo reader. When you subscribe like this it means you can see all the latest feeds from your favorite sites without having to go to each one individually. You can also track the progress of your feeds with Feedburner’s stats and find out just what your visitors are doing and how many people have subscribed to your feed. You can also use Feedburner’s pinging service; this notifies pingomatic about your feed which alerts Google and Yahoo, and all the other search engines that the content on your blog or website has been updated – the more you do this, the more popular your site becomes.

Popularizing Your Feed

Feedburner is a great way of finding out which of your feeds is the most popular and this means that you can, if you choose, write more of the content that your visitors seem to like. Creating RSS feeds, among other things will increase your blog or website’s profile, bring you more traffic, and, if you have a Google account, potentially more Adsense earnings. The fact is that both Google and Yahoo love new, unique content, so the more you update your site, the more popular and highly ranked it should become. I find that it is a good idea, once a feed has been burned, to submit it to sites like Stumble Upon and Blogging Zoom as both of these social sites will attract more traffic to your site.

The other thing that is good for your content is to submit it to RSS feed submission websites such as SubmitmyRSS as these sites rank quite highly with Google and any visitors from there will also look good for your own site. So you can see that RSS feeds are a really easy way of publicizing your own feeds, and accessing the feeds of others.
