Becoming A Real Estate Agent

by Ruth Gandolfi

The first thing that you will want to consider if you are looking at becoming a real estate agent, is whether this is what you truly want to do. If you are looking to venture into the world of selling real estate, then you will need to realize that this is not something to take lightly. This is a business where total commitment is the norm. As an agent, you will need to be available and willing to do whatever the client wants in order to have success and to build your business.

Education

The first item to take into consideration is to know what type of education as well as where you will receive it. In any state in the United States, it is necessary to obtain a license to sell real estate. This will allow you to be able to represent people in real estate transactions as an agent. In order to be able to do this you will need to have a certain number of classes as well as class hours to be able to even sit and take the test to become a real estate agent.

Once you have completed the classes and taken the tests you are now able to become a certified real estate agent. This is just the first step in becoming a real estate agent. In some cases, it is possible to find a company that will sponsor you and your education. This will allow you to go to the classes and they will deduct the costs from your commissions, or else allow you to earn them back based on volume you have brought in to the company.

Client Building

After becoming a real estate agent, you will need to find clients. There are some different ways to approach this. You can sit in your office and simply wait for customers to come to you. Yes, this can produce results, but this is not a very effective method.

A second method is to create a list of everyone that you know and to let them and everyone that they may know that you are entering the world of real estate. Here you will either do traditional or email announcements with a business card and a short letter talking about yourself and what it is that you plan to do. Mail this out to as many people as you possibly can to get the knowledge of your new career out there by word of mouth.

Get Started

Once you have completed all of the tests and announced yourself, it is highly recommended that you find a mentor within the company that you are working. As much as you want to believe that you will be able to do this with no help and everything will come naturally, becoming a real estate agent is not that easy.

You will want to find someone you can relate to ands that will be willing and able to show you some of the tricks of the trade. You will want to find someone you can trust and has experience so they can share their knowledge with you.
