Affiliate marketing definitionAffiliate marketing definition: affiliate marketing is using one site to drive traffic to another. It is a form of online marketing which is frequently overlooked by advertisers. For a company, this is one of the best ways to sell its products. The product selling company signs up individuals or companies who then market the product for the company for a commission. Signed up individuals or companies are "affiliates". For affiliates this is a way to generate revenue without selling. There is no storage, no overhead, to product development, just a little bit of time and effort on your part. Amazon.com is a good example of affiliate program in action. They launched the concept of affiliate programs in 1997 (although they were not the first). Amazon.com has thousands of affiliates that reccommend Amazon products to their viewers. Thus, Amazon.com reaches millions of highly targetted website customers that might not have considerred buying and Amazon.com product through random browsing. Affiliate marketing has grown quickly since its beginnings. The e-commerce website, viewed as a marketing little baby in the early days, became a very important part of the internet business.
